    • Turbo Expo in Phoenix, AZ

Posted at 10:26 am by Lorenzo Mazzei, on June 21, 2019

      17-21 June 2019

The first Turbo Expo attended with the new affiliation was held in Phoenix, Arizona. It has been probably the hottest place I have visited so far (luckily I compensated with a summer vacation in Iceland).

At the conference several noticeable papers were presented, whereas the exhibition displayed interesting products and, most of all, gave the opportunity to meet friends and industrial partners.

Converning my activity, I presented the outcomes of the PhD thesis defended by my colleague Davide. The presentation received significant appreciation, honestly more than expected. Multiphysics simulations accounting for transient effects are indeed a hot topic at the moment.

A picture taken during my presentation, thanks Carlo for the nice photo!

As always, ASME Turbo Expo is confirmed as the must-go conference in our business. See in London, there will be big surprises!

    • Workshop on Combustor and Turbine Heat Transfer at UTRC

Posted at 9:00 pm by Lorenzo Mazzei, on March 12, 2019

      11-12 March 2019

I was invited with my colleague Alessio Picchi at a workshop on Combustor and Turbine Heat Transfer. The event was held at the United Technologies Research Center in East Hartford, Connecticut, where, among others, research programs for Pratt & Whitney are carried out.

I had the opportunity to show the numerical work performed in the framework of the EU-funded projects LEMCOTEC and FACTOR, which focused respectively on the design of an effusion-cooled lean-burn combustor and the interaction between combustor and turbine.

Despite the cold weather we received warm hospitality and our presentations have been much appreciated. It’s priceless to receive the compliments of some of the finest engineers in the business.

    • Combustion Day in Florence

Posted at 9:00 pm by Lorenzo Mazzei, on November 6, 2018

      6 November 2018

In November the University of Florence hosted a 1-day meeting concerning gas turbine combustors with the Italian universities, research centers, labs and OEMs.

I had the opportunity to present a brief highlight on the work carried out by our research team in the framework of the EU-funded research programs, with a special focus on the the lean burn technology.

You can take a look to the presentation here.

    • Workshop #TEDCOM a Rivalta

Posted at 9:00 pm by Lorenzo Mazzei, on April 6, 2018

      6 April 2018

Our research team was invited in Turin for the first Workshop of the TEchnology Development COMmunity (#TEDCOM).

The event aimed at gathering all the universities and research centers contributing to the development Avio Aero in the aeronautics field.

9 communities were created to collaborate and share knowledge and technology of different topics such as combustor, turbine, gearbox and so on…

    • ANSYS Hall of Fame 2018

Posted at 9:00 pm by Lorenzo Mazzei, on January 9, 2018

      9 January 2018

We had the great honor of entering the ANSYS Hall of Fame 2018. Our work concerning the simulation of lean burn aeroengine combustors was considered one of the best three contributions.

Additionally, we got an article on the magazine produced by the University of Florence.

    • Inauguration of the ComHeat Lab

Posted at 9:00 pm by Lorenzo Mazzei, on December 7, 2017

      7 December 2017

After years of collaboration between the University of Florence and Avio Aero in the development of cutting-edge technology for innovative combustors, the two partners have decided to strengthen their relationship, creating a joint lab.

The Lab, called Comheat (Combustion&Heat Transfer) has the objective of developing solutions in the fields of combustion, heat transfer, fluid mechanics in aeronautical combustors and turbines.

You can find the announcement of the University of Florence here.

    • ISimT-17 in Rottach-Egern

Posted at 9:00 pm by Lorenzo Mazzei, on November 21, 2017

      20-21 November 2017

I attended for the second time the ISimT-17, Symposium on Innovative Simulations in Turbomachinery. The venue was quite far from civilization but the hotel on the lake gave a true Bayern experience!

As always, the hosting organization provided by the ISimQ guys was over the top, with a marvellous gadget for the presenters!

As far as my contribution is concerned, I decided to show the progress achieved on the same topic I presented the year before on combustor-turbine interaction. The presentation was quite impressive, mostly thanks to the video of the scale-adaptive simulation showing the propagation of the hot streak through the film-cooled nozzle guide vanes.
For the interested reader, the presentation is available on ResearchGate.

    • Technology Network in GE Aviation – Munich

Posted at 9:00 pm by Lorenzo Mazzei, on October 5, 2017

      5 October 2017

We were invited in Munich in the European headquarters of GE to take part in an event organized by GE Aviation to share with the partners some perspectives on the futures of Additive and Digital.

Even though I was there before, I really appreciated the opportunity to be there with some of the most relevant players of both industrial and research fields.

In addition to the visit to the Additive lab, what I enjoyed the most were the interactive sessions organized by GE researchers to show us their approach to problem-solving and some real consulting applications they were carrying out in the area of Digital.

    • Turbo Expo in Charlotte, NC

Posted at 9:00 pm by Lorenzo Mazzei, on June 30, 2017

      26-30 June 2017

The Turbo Expo 2017 was held in Charlotte. The city didn’t look impressive (except for the typical American skyscrapers), but the welcome reception was organized in the suggestive NASCAR Hall of Fame.

At the end of the conference my former colleague Stefano Puggelli received the award of Young Engineer Turbo Expo Travel Award 2017.

    • LEMCOTEC: Final meeting in Brussels

Posted at 9:00 pm by Lorenzo Mazzei, on June 13, 2017

      13 June 2017

Final meeting of the LEMCOTEC project in the heart of Europe, Brussels! Unfortunately I didn’t have the pleasure to visit the city, since I stayed less than 24 hours.

      The European Commission

I presented the results of the final simulations carried out to compare CFD against the data from the full annular tests. The results were only preliminary, but gave an idea of what we presented the year later at the Turbo Expo in Oslo.

LEMCOTEC wasn’t just a research project, but also the opportunity to make a huge leap forward for me and the entire research group. You can find all the work we disseminated on Researchgate.
