    • LEMCOTEC: Meeting and Workshop in Potsdam

Posted at 9:00 pm by Lorenzo Mazzei, on December 8, 2016

      6-8 December 2016

The meeting of the project was held in Potsdam, a nice city close to Berlin (have you ever heard of the Sanssouci Park?).

Attending the meetings for the first time, I was impressed by the scale of the project. LEMCOTEC included most of the aeronautics industries in Europe and the most excellent universities and research centres in this field.
The projected lasted 69 months and cost roughly 69 million Euros.

The typical collaborative spirit of the EU-funded research programs was confirmed by a widely participated public workshop where the coordinators of other projects came to disseminate their results.

    • ISimT-16 in Regensburg

Posted at 9:00 pm by Lorenzo Mazzei, on November 29, 2016

      28-29 November 2016

I was invited to present a contribution on my research at the first ISimT symposium organized by the ISimQ guys in Regensburg, Bayern.

The event was indeed German-centric and very focused on turbomachinery applications, but I had the opportunity to enjoy the German hospitality and the quality of the contributions.

I decided to present some findings of our research carried out in the FACTOR project on the combustor-turbine interaction. I provided some insights about the lessons learnt of the extensive CFD activity carried out with scale-resolving simulations on the combustor simulator and I think it was well received by the audience.
For the interested reader, the presentation is available on ResearchGate.

P.S. If you are travelling around Regensburg you can’t miss the opportunity to visit the Valhalla memorial, a Greek-style temple that dominates the Danube valley. Crazy stuff!

    • Turbo Expo 2016 in Seoul

Posted at 7:00 pm by Lorenzo Mazzei, on June 17, 2016

      13-17 June 2016

My farthest Turbo Expo so far was held in Seoul, South Korea. Unfortunately I had very little to visit the city, since I had to present 3 papers at the conference (the first and last time, I hope!).

Despite that, we found the time to take a walk through the city and I was really impressed by the mix of ancient and modern, which is something unusual of Italy.

As always, Turbo Expo is a fantastic opportunity to spend some times with the colleagues.

    • IMPACT-AE: Final meeting and Workshop in Dahlewitz

Posted at 9:00 pm by Lorenzo Mazzei, on May 25, 2016

      24-25 May 2016

Visit at Rolls-Royce Deutschland in Dahlewitz on the occasion of the final meeting of the IMPACT-AE project. The following day I had the opportunity to present my research activity during the public workshop in front of some of the most important European aeronautical combustor manufacturers.

    • IMPACT-AE: Meeting in London

Posted at 9:00 pm by Lorenzo Mazzei, on October 13, 2015

      12-13 October 2015

The meeting of the IMPACT-AE project was held in London, in the headquarters of Rolls-Royce. It’s indeed the best venue we have ever had!

Apart from that, my colleague Alessio and I had the opportunity to visit The City. London is indeed my second favorite city in Europe.

    • Numerical Heat Transfer 2015 at Warswaw

Posted at 9:00 pm by Lorenzo Mazzei, on September 30, 2015

      27-30 September 2015

Together with my colleague Lorenzo Winchler we had a touch-and-go to NHT conference in Poland, to present the latest findings of our research on heat transfer application in gas turbines.

I presented a contribution of the assessment of different modelling strategies for film cooling. Apparently the paper was appreciated and received the transaction to journal. You can find the article here.

    • PhD graduation cerimony

Posted at 9:00 pm by Lorenzo Mazzei, on July 9, 2015

      9 July 2015

The graduation cerimony for the PhD was held in Palazzo Vecchio, the very ancient City Hall of Florence. It was probably one of the hottest day of that summer, but the location was indeed superb.

    • Turbo Expo 2015 in Montreal

Posted at 9:00 pm by Lorenzo Mazzei, on June 19, 2015

      15-19 June 2015

Probably the best Turbo Expo so far! The location was fantastic, one of the most European cities in North America, with a fantastic weather and a lively atmosphere!

It was also the most only conference attended by all my long-standing colleagues, so we had the possibility to really enjoy the week.

I had the opportunity to visit also the facility of Pratt & Whitney Canada in Montreal, but unfortunately I have no photo to show 😦

    • 15th International Conference on Numerical Combustion at Avignon

Posted at 9:00 pm by Lorenzo Mazzei, on April 22, 2015

      19-22 April 2015

Just after the end of my PhD I was invited at the NC15 with my colleague Stefano Puggelli to present a contribution. The topic was, of course, the metal temperature estimation of gas turbine combustors. 🙂

Interestingly, I will hardly forget this business trip, for two reasons:

      1. The location of the conference was probably one of the best in the world. The event was in fact held in the Palais des Papes in the lately capital of the Avignon Papacy.

      2. The event was actually a turning point for the research activity in our team. Motivated by the comparison against the participants at the conference, we decided to start working hard to introduce reactive LES in our activity.
Keep in mind that at that time we were working with CFX performing only RANS simulations with the eddy dissipation model and 2-steps mechanisms…

I am proud to say that within a few years the quality of our works has soared. You don’t believe? Take a look at my last publications on ResearchGate! 😉

    • Discussion of the PhD thesis

Posted at 9:00 pm by Lorenzo Mazzei, on March 16, 2015

      16 March 2015

After three years of work I defended my PhD thesis. The activity consisted in the development of a CFD-based thermal methodology for the calculation of metal temperature in gas turbine combustors.

The tool consisted of coupling a RANS simulation of the chamber to determine the convective heat loads, a radiative solver to calculate the radiative heat loads and a conduction solver to estimate the metal temperature distribution.

The work was carried out in CFX, but paved the way to further developments carried out in the following years, such as the implementation in Fluent and the additional step forward to account for transient phenomena in both fluid and solid domains.
