The European research in the context of low emission combustion technologies is producing relevant outcomes. Substaintial funding by the Clean Sky 1 and Clean Sky 2 Programmes have helped the European universities, reearch centers, SMEs and OEMs to develop knowledge and ultimately technologies ready to be implemented in new aeroengines.
The Clean Sky Joint Undertaking has organized in Brussels a workshop to gather the people involved in several projects and disseminate some of the most relevant outcomes on low NOx combustion technologies. Additionally, combustion experts around Europe have had the opportunity to discuss the relevant items to set-up a roadmap for future combustion technology. In fact, despite the increasing interest in electrification, combustion seems at the moment the only viable way to power long-range aircraft.
The round table organised at the end of the day has collected the vision of priorities in terms of research for the next Framework Programme and for the next decade(s), i.e. for mid-term EIS (2035) and for long term EIS (2050).
Apparently there will be a lot of work to do in the next decades. And we are ready for that.

In November the University of Florence hosted a 1-day meeting concerning gas turbine combustors with the Italian universities, research centers, labs and OEMs.
I had the opportunity to present a brief highlight on the work carried out by our research team in the framework of the EU-funded research programs, with a special focus on the the lean burn technology.
Final meeting of the LEMCOTEC project in the heart of Europe, Brussels! Unfortunately I didn’t have the pleasure to visit the city, since I stayed less than 24 hours.

I presented the results of the final simulations carried out to compare CFD against the data from the full annular tests. The results were only preliminary, but gave an idea of what we presented the year later at the Turbo Expo in Oslo.
LEMCOTEC wasn’t just a research project, but also the opportunity to make a huge leap forward for me and the entire research group. You can find all the work we disseminated on Researchgate.

The meeting of the project was held in Potsdam, a nice city close to Berlin (have you ever heard of the Sanssouci Park?).
Attending the meetings for the first time, I was impressed by the scale of the project. LEMCOTEC included most of the aeronautics industries in Europe and the most excellent universities and research centres in this field. The projected lasted 69 months and cost roughly 69 million Euros.
The typical collaborative spirit of the EU-funded research programs was confirmed by a widely participated public workshop where the coordinators of other projects came to disseminate their results.

Visit at Rolls-Royce Deutschland in Dahlewitz on the occasion of the final meeting of the IMPACT-AE project. The following day I had the opportunity to present my research activity during the public workshop in front of some of the most important European aeronautical combustor manufacturers.
First meeting at home (more or less!) for the IMPACT-AE project. The event was held at Avio Prop, the factory dedicated to the additive manufacturing of aeronautical injection systems and low-pressure turbine blades.
I have to admit that at the time being I didn’t realize the extent of the revolution determined by the advent of the additive manufacturing.
Meeting of the IMPACT-AE project in Derby, headquarters of Rolls-Royce UK. Due to a missed connection in Paris we hadn’t the opportunity to visit the factory, but the exhibition was really amazing.
