    • Workshop on Combustor and Turbine Heat Transfer at UTRC

Posted at 9:00 pm by Lorenzo Mazzei, on March 12, 2019

      11-12 March 2019

I was invited with my colleague Alessio Picchi at a workshop on Combustor and Turbine Heat Transfer. The event was held at the United Technologies Research Center in East Hartford, Connecticut, where, among others, research programs for Pratt & Whitney are carried out.

I had the opportunity to show the numerical work performed in the framework of the EU-funded projects LEMCOTEC and FACTOR, which focused respectively on the design of an effusion-cooled lean-burn combustor and the interaction between combustor and turbine.

Despite the cold weather we received warm hospitality and our presentations have been much appreciated. It’s priceless to receive the compliments of some of the finest engineers in the business.

    • Combustion Day in Florence

Posted at 9:00 pm by Lorenzo Mazzei, on November 6, 2018

      6 November 2018

In November the University of Florence hosted a 1-day meeting concerning gas turbine combustors with the Italian universities, research centers, labs and OEMs.

I had the opportunity to present a brief highlight on the work carried out by our research team in the framework of the EU-funded research programs, with a special focus on the the lean burn technology.

You can take a look to the presentation here.

    • ISimT-17 in Rottach-Egern

Posted at 9:00 pm by Lorenzo Mazzei, on November 21, 2017

      20-21 November 2017

I attended for the second time the ISimT-17, Symposium on Innovative Simulations in Turbomachinery. The venue was quite far from civilization but the hotel on the lake gave a true Bayern experience!

As always, the hosting organization provided by the ISimQ guys was over the top, with a marvellous gadget for the presenters!

As far as my contribution is concerned, I decided to show the progress achieved on the same topic I presented the year before on combustor-turbine interaction. The presentation was quite impressive, mostly thanks to the video of the scale-adaptive simulation showing the propagation of the hot streak through the film-cooled nozzle guide vanes.
For the interested reader, the presentation is available on ResearchGate.

    • Turbo Expo in Charlotte, NC

Posted at 9:00 pm by Lorenzo Mazzei, on June 30, 2017

      26-30 June 2017

The Turbo Expo 2017 was held in Charlotte. The city didn’t look impressive (except for the typical American skyscrapers), but the welcome reception was organized in the suggestive NASCAR Hall of Fame.

At the end of the conference my former colleague Stefano Puggelli received the award of Young Engineer Turbo Expo Travel Award 2017.

    • ISimT-16 in Regensburg

Posted at 9:00 pm by Lorenzo Mazzei, on November 29, 2016

      28-29 November 2016

I was invited to present a contribution on my research at the first ISimT symposium organized by the ISimQ guys in Regensburg, Bayern.

The event was indeed German-centric and very focused on turbomachinery applications, but I had the opportunity to enjoy the German hospitality and the quality of the contributions.

I decided to present some findings of our research carried out in the FACTOR project on the combustor-turbine interaction. I provided some insights about the lessons learnt of the extensive CFD activity carried out with scale-resolving simulations on the combustor simulator and I think it was well received by the audience.
For the interested reader, the presentation is available on ResearchGate.

P.S. If you are travelling around Regensburg you can’t miss the opportunity to visit the Valhalla memorial, a Greek-style temple that dominates the Danube valley. Crazy stuff!

    • Turbo Expo 2016 in Seoul

Posted at 7:00 pm by Lorenzo Mazzei, on June 17, 2016

      13-17 June 2016

My farthest Turbo Expo so far was held in Seoul, South Korea. Unfortunately I had very little to visit the city, since I had to present 3 papers at the conference (the first and last time, I hope!).

Despite that, we found the time to take a walk through the city and I was really impressed by the mix of ancient and modern, which is something unusual of Italy.

As always, Turbo Expo is a fantastic opportunity to spend some times with the colleagues.

    • Numerical Heat Transfer 2015 at Warswaw

Posted at 9:00 pm by Lorenzo Mazzei, on September 30, 2015

      27-30 September 2015

Together with my colleague Lorenzo Winchler we had a touch-and-go to NHT conference in Poland, to present the latest findings of our research on heat transfer application in gas turbines.

I presented a contribution of the assessment of different modelling strategies for film cooling. Apparently the paper was appreciated and received the transaction to journal. You can find the article here.

    • 15th International Conference on Numerical Combustion at Avignon

Posted at 9:00 pm by Lorenzo Mazzei, on April 22, 2015

      19-22 April 2015

Just after the end of my PhD I was invited at the NC15 with my colleague Stefano Puggelli to present a contribution. The topic was, of course, the metal temperature estimation of gas turbine combustors. 🙂

Interestingly, I will hardly forget this business trip, for two reasons:

      1. The location of the conference was probably one of the best in the world. The event was in fact held in the Palais des Papes in the lately capital of the Avignon Papacy.

      2. The event was actually a turning point for the research activity in our team. Motivated by the comparison against the participants at the conference, we decided to start working hard to introduce reactive LES in our activity.
Keep in mind that at that time we were working with CFX performing only RANS simulations with the eddy dissipation model and 2-steps mechanisms…

I am proud to say that within a few years the quality of our works has soared. You don’t believe? Take a look at my last publications on ResearchGate! 😉
