    • Turbo Expo 2023 in Boston, MA

Posted at 9:00 pm by Lorenzo Mazzei, on June 30, 2023

      26-30 June 2022

Another great Turbo Expo with Ergon Research in Boston, MA! Also this year we arranged a booth where we met a lot a former colleagues, friends and customers!

The Expo is always a super opportunity to find a lot of cool stuff from OEMs and research centers, such as GE Aerospace and NASA!

This year I also met in person with the Global Gas Turbine News team, of which I have been appointed Chair for the next couple of years. If you are interested, you can find more information on our website: https://event.asme.org/Turbo-Expo/About/Global-Gas-Turbine-News

But it was also unique opportunity to meet our friends at ANSYS…

…and companions of many adventures at UNIFI.

See you in London for Turbo Expo 2024!

And of course, we presented a lot of technical papers, here’s the list:

      • Assessment of a Conjugate Heat Transfer Method on an Effusion Cooled Combustor Operated With a Swirl Stabilized Partially Premixed Flame
        • Investigation of the metal temperature prediction in a combustor using steady and transient approaches for the coupling between the different physics
      • Effect of Jet-to-Plate Temperature Ratio on Flow and Heat Transfer Features of Active Clearance Control Systems
        • The third paper of the ACCENTO project, this time highlighting the impact of the temperature ratio on the heat transfer performance of the LPTACC system
      • Assessment of Thickened Flame Model Coupled With Flamelet Generated Manifold on a Low-Swirl Partially Premixed Gaseous Lifted Flame
        • Another paper presenting the results of the work carried out in the CHAiRLIFT project
      • Calibration of a CFD Methodology for the Simulation of Additively Manufactured Components Accounting for the Effects of Diameter and Printing Direction on Friction and Heat Transfer
        • Third paper on the topic of CFD modelling of thermal management components made by AM
      • Design Procedure of a Rotating Cavity Rig for Hot Gas Ingestion Investigation
        • Work carried out with UNIFI and Baker Hughes, on the design of a new rotating rig to measure the sealing effectiveness in the first stator-rotor turbine cavity
      • CFD Analysis of the Forces on a Steam Turbine Balance Seal Packing Ring
        • Activity carried out with Baker Hughes, using CFD to design a type of seals for steam turbine applications

    • Virtual Turbo Expo 2021

Posted at 9:00 pm by Lorenzo Mazzei, on June 11, 2021

      7-11 June 2021

Another virtual Turbo Expo due to the Covid pandemic, without any possibility to meet people and friends. Despite that, we presented several technical papers:

      • Scale Resolving CFD Investigations of Aerothermal Field and Emissions of a Lean Burn Aeroengine Combustor
        • Activity on an Avio Aero lean-burn combustor in partnership with Ansys, testing different modelling approaches
      • Assessment of CFD Models for Multiphase Heat Transfer in Different Boiling Regimes
        • Activity with Avio, benchmarking models for the prediction of heat transfer and boiling (relevant in several space applications)
      • Effect of Jet-to-Jet Distance and Pipe Position on Flow and Heat Transfer Features of Active Clearance Control Systems
        • Another paper from the ACCENTO project, presenting some results at low-temperature ratio at different geometrical and fluid-dynamic conditions
      • Reduced-Order Models for Effusion Modelling in Gas Turbine Combustors
        • The outcome of the huge effort done by Simone Paccati during his PhD thesis, aiming at developing a high-fidelity film cooling model
      • On the Extrapolation of Rim Sealing Performance From Test Bench to Real Engine: A Numerical Survey
        • The work with UNIFI and Baker Hughes was propaedeutic to the next activities focused on the design of a new rotating rig with innovative experimental techniques for measuring the sealing effectiveness
      • Calibration of a CFD Methodology for The Simulation of Roughness Effects on Friction and Heat Transfer in Additive Manufactured Components
        • The second paper on the topic, this presented by myself

    • Member of the ASME-IGTI Gas Turbine Heat Transfer Committee + Best Paper Award

Posted at 9:00 pm by Lorenzo Mazzei, on June 25, 2020

      25th June 2020

After years spent contributing to the activities of the ASME-IGTI Turbo Expo conferences (first as reviewer, then as co-chairman) I decided to apply for a becoming a member of the Gas Turbine Heat Transfer Committee. The atmosphere of the group has always fascinated me, giving the impression of being part of a large family that meets once a year. Expect that this family is composed by the most influential people in the gas turbine heat transfer 🙂

Sponsored by Riccardo, my nomination was accepted by the other members! I have to confess that it’s been one of the most thrilling achievement of my professional life. I’ll do my best to be worthy of such honor and serve on the committee with the same enthusiasm as the others.

Additionally, some friends of the University of Florence and I have been awarded with the Best Paper Award for a paper presented at the Turbo Expo 2019 in Phoenix. It was indeed a huge day!

Interested in getting more information about the work? You can take a look at the PowerPoint presentation prepared by Lorenzo Cocchi on ResearchGate!

    • Turbo Expo in Phoenix, AZ

Posted at 10:26 am by Lorenzo Mazzei, on June 21, 2019

      17-21 June 2019

The first Turbo Expo attended with the new affiliation was held in Phoenix, Arizona. It has been probably the hottest place I have visited so far (luckily I compensated with a summer vacation in Iceland).

At the conference several noticeable papers were presented, whereas the exhibition displayed interesting products and, most of all, gave the opportunity to meet friends and industrial partners.

Converning my activity, I presented the outcomes of the PhD thesis defended by my colleague Davide. The presentation received significant appreciation, honestly more than expected. Multiphysics simulations accounting for transient effects are indeed a hot topic at the moment.

A picture taken during my presentation, thanks Carlo for the nice photo!

As always, ASME Turbo Expo is confirmed as the must-go conference in our business. See in London, there will be big surprises!

    • Turbo Expo in Charlotte, NC

Posted at 9:00 pm by Lorenzo Mazzei, on June 30, 2017

      26-30 June 2017

The Turbo Expo 2017 was held in Charlotte. The city didn’t look impressive (except for the typical American skyscrapers), but the welcome reception was organized in the suggestive NASCAR Hall of Fame.

At the end of the conference my former colleague Stefano Puggelli received the award of Young Engineer Turbo Expo Travel Award 2017.

    • Turbo Expo 2016 in Seoul

Posted at 7:00 pm by Lorenzo Mazzei, on June 17, 2016

      13-17 June 2016

My farthest Turbo Expo so far was held in Seoul, South Korea. Unfortunately I had very little to visit the city, since I had to present 3 papers at the conference (the first and last time, I hope!).

Despite that, we found the time to take a walk through the city and I was really impressed by the mix of ancient and modern, which is something unusual of Italy.

As always, Turbo Expo is a fantastic opportunity to spend some times with the colleagues.

    • Turbo Expo 2015 in Montreal

Posted at 9:00 pm by Lorenzo Mazzei, on June 19, 2015

      15-19 June 2015

Probably the best Turbo Expo so far! The location was fantastic, one of the most European cities in North America, with a fantastic weather and a lively atmosphere!

It was also the most only conference attended by all my long-standing colleagues, so we had the possibility to really enjoy the week.

I had the opportunity to visit also the facility of Pratt & Whitney Canada in Montreal, but unfortunately I have no photo to show 😦

      16-20 June 2014

First experience as a presenter at the ASME Turbo Expo in Düsseldorf. I still remember the anxiety before the departure. It was just the beginning of the journey.
